Chelsea Handler, “Chelsea Lately” host on E! and comedian, is getting her own Grand Central Publishing imprint. Handler’s books have made a regular appearance on the best seller list. For the imprint she has been given a deal for three books.
The next book from Handler, “Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me,” is being released in May 2011. It will be issued under Borderline Amazing, her new imprint. Chunk, Handler’s dog, may get his say finally as well.
“Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea,” landed Handler on the bestseller list. “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang” repeated the feat.
Many comedians ply their wit in print form. “The Bedwetter” by Sarah Silverman was on the LA Times bestseller list for 10 weeks this year. This fall Jon Stewart’s “Earth” was #1 on the LA Times nonfiction bestseller list. This holiday season “I’m Dreaming of a Black Christmas” by Lewis Black will surely warm dark hearts. To share his charm Adam Carolla is offering “In Fifty Years We’ll All Be Chicks… And Other Complaints from an Angry Middle-Aged White Guy.”
However none of these other comedians have received their own imprint. It proves that Handler, who in September was the host of MTV’s Video Music Awards, doesn’t just make people laugh. She also does a great job of leveraging her brand.
Chelsea Handler will join Joel McHale, fellow late night host on E!, on NBC. Wait a minute will Chelsea be playing the new alcoholic professor of Greendale’s? We can always hope. There is good news, however. NBC is picking up the pilot for “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea.” The show is based on the popular memoirs of Handler’s.
The comedy will be pulling stories from all three of Handler’s books: “Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang,” “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea,” and “My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands.” The show will focus on a 20 something year old woman’s life, closely resembling Handler, but not having the profession of author/comedian. Handler has lived through these hilarious situations already to help make her books best sellers. So instead of working in front of a camera she will be the executive producer and work behind the scenes along with Tom Brunelle, Borderline Amazing partner, and Mike and Werner Clements of Werner Entertainment. Handler said, the show will draw from my books, providing me with creative control of placing a younger actress in situations that was in at the age of 26, as I sit back and laugh while not getting arrested.
Is Chelsea Handler our 21st century Candace Bushnell? It may well be the Carrie Curse. It seems any comedy that is about single, professional women will always be compared with “Sex and the City.” Anyone who has read Handler’s books will know they are full of material that isn’t appropriate for network television, so you may be bummed out at the idea of her antics being possibly watered down.
Since 2006 Handler has been the host of “Chelsea Lately. She is working currently on “After Lately,” which is a comedy in the style of the “Larry Sanders Show,” based on her job as the late night host on E!. She was also recently cast with Chris Pine, Tom Hardy and Reese Witherspoon in the upcoming movie “This Means War.”
